Mad Monks Invade South Street on All Hallows Eve!
Rebellious Monks, dressed in robes and carrying hammers and nails, invaded South Street at 5 p.m. on Halloween.
The mad monks nailed up copies of Martin Luther’s infamous “95 Thesis” on doors in honor of the 483rd anniversary of the revolutionary reformer’s attack on what he saw as problems with the church and government.
The event is in conjunction with the play “Luther” at the Emanuel Lutheran Church on south 4th street. The play, a dazzling drama about Luther and the Medieval world he rebelled against, opens November 2 at 8 p.m. The church is one of the most distinct landmarks in South Philadelphia and has a long, rich history of its own.
The site specific show is being produced by Iron Age Theatre, the company that did the sold-out show “Tunnel,” about the famous 1945 prison escape, at Eastern State Penitentiary.
The robed and hooded monks on south street chanted, carried banners
and
nailed up copies of the thesis up and down the street. Luther himself
made an
appearance to inspire the crowd. Monks also be sold indulgences to
forgive
sins and get a dollar off the show ticket price. Later the entire crew
relocated to
Monks Cafe on 16th street to continue the nailing event.
“Luther” is co-sponsored by the Emanuel Luthern Church. With financial support from Robert Dettore and Dettore Associates, Pizzeria Uno and Fran Doyle. Rehearsal Space provided by The Centre Theatre.
